Walking Towards Health: A Public Health Initiative for the Increment of Physical Activity Level in the Local Community in Croatia

Summary
This article discusses the advantages of walking for health. There are evidences that walking has positive impacts on human health. Walking should be encouraged among all demographic groups, regardless of age or gender, as it is the most fundamental kind of movement and the easiest physical exercise to participate in. The Walking towards Health project activity was started and implemented in all 21 Croatian counties by the Croatian Institute of Public Health in partnership with county public health institutes to promote regular physical activity during free time. Croatian Walking Festival and National Walking Day have both been founded and observed. All Croatian counties started regularly implementing Walking towards Health initiatives in 2019. 12017 walkers participated in 514 activities, averaging 24.5 actions and 23.4 people per activity, or 24.5 actions per county. A comprehensive public health program and the participation of all local community stakeholders will help to increase the level of physical activity. As a result, health systems ought to play a more active part in encouraging physical activity.
Relevance
Activity of The Walking towards Health project activity which was started and implemented in all Croatian counties by the Croatian Institute of Public Health in partnership with county public health institutes may promote regular physical activity during free time. Some additionally activity, such as Croatian Walking Festival and National Walking Day have may can improve the public's perception of the importance of physical activity for human health, the prevention of all chronic diseases, including chronic lung diseases. Also, in patients who are ill, such activities can contribute to faster rehabilitation and recovery.
